• The Learning to Teach/Teaching to Learn program at the IU School of Education on the Indianapolis campus has won second-place honors in the 1997 Distinguished Program in Teacher Education competition, sponsored by the national Association of Teacher Educators.

• For six years, students from IU, Princeton, Emory, Harvard and several Israeli universities have been excavating the ancient Tel Bet-Shemesh, a seven-acre mound in Israel near the site of the unfolding Biblical story of Samson and Delilah. The royal border town was controlled at various times by Canaanites, Philistines and Israelites.
