IndyCat makes its debut at IUPUI

Going to the library is about to get easier at IUPUI.

This week, University Library unveiled IndyCat, an automated on-line catalog that will allow scholars, students and the general public to access its electronic information resources from anywhere in the world.

University Librarian Philip Tompkins says the new system is a perfect fit for IUPUI's state- of-the-art library, which features image viewers, full text storage and retrieval systems, and multimedia resources.

"It catapults the catalog into the World Wide Web environment along with the rest of our electronic information resources," he said.

The system, based on Ameritech Library Services' Horizon software, will be implemented within the next year at the seven other IU campuses in what Ameritech officials say is the largest application of their product in the United States. IUPUI is serving as the designated test site of the new on-line catalog for the IU system.

IU and the University of Chicago, where Horizon was partially implemented last year, have worked closely with Ameritech to enhance the system for large academic and research laboratories.

IU President Myles Brand, IUPUI Chancellor Gerald L. Bepko and Lana Porter, president of Ameritech Library Services, were on hand for the unveiling ceremony Wednesday (Sept. 10) at the Ruth Lilly Auditorium.

Tompkins said extensive testing of the system by IUPUI faculty and students has helped make IndyCat user-friendly and will ease implementation of the software at other IU libraries.
