South Bend's new chancellor installed at Sunday ceremony

By Jayne Spencer

Opening offices in the evening to accommodate a non-traditional student population, increasing and retaining minority students and a new community service office were a few of the topics addressed Sunday (Sept. 14) by the new chancellor of Indiana University South Bend.

In an installation ceremony at Northside Hall, Kenneth L. Perrin became the third chancellor to head IUSB. The event highlighted activities, including a faculty picnic Friday night, designed to celebrate the accomplishments of IUSB students, faculty and staff.

IU President Myles Brand led a platform of dignitaries including representatives from the area's other colleges and universities, from other IU campuses and from the community in a traditional celebration of leadership.

A musical interlude, featuring students from the Toradze Piano Studio at IUSB, preceded the installation.

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to a reception and a showcase of student achievement. Festivities included student actors traveling through the crowds in costume and samples of award-winning student presentations.
