ho do we serve? As employees of the state's largest
university, what compels us to climb out of bed each
day and point our autos, bikes, feet, in the direction of
the nearest IU campus? A paycheck, to be sure. Compensation is a perfectly respectable motivation. But deep inside, we want our work to count for more than that. If we stop to think about it, we know we're making higher education possible for thousands of students on eight campuses---students of all ages, from our hometowns and 158 countries throughout the world as well. It's no small gift to make a direct difference in the lives of 90,000 people year after year, by teaching them or by creating an environment for others to teach. But even that doesn't complete the picture. The fact is, whether we spend time evaluating research data, administering medical care, polishing a floor, patroling the grounds, serving meals, fixing com- puters, or any of the tasks involved in hundreds of job titles, we're supporting an endeavor that improves the quality of life for every Hoosier and extends well beyond campus boundaries. As IU President Myles Brand has said: "It's sometimes difficult for us to tell where the university stops and the rest of the world begins.'' Exactly so. |
