United Way campaign: 'Now more than ever'

By Rose McIlveen

"Strong Commitment, Strong Community -- We Care...Now More Than Ever" is the slogan of the United Way campaign for the IUB campus. Co-chairs for the fund drive are Judith Palmer, vice president and chief financial officer, and Jack W. Bennett, professor of optometry and dean of the school (photo above).

The 1997 goal for the campaign, which extends through Nov. 14, is $500,000. Last year the Bloomington campus contributed more than $430,000, which was slightly more than 27 percent of Monroe County's total pledges and gifts.

Gov. Frank O'Bannon (left) joined IU Kokomo students (including Eric Wortman, right) and members of the Destination: Education IUK program for a recent United Way "Day of Caring." The governor and company cleaned and painted historic Elliott House, in readiness for the transfer of that property for use by the Howard County Historical Society. (See story in next week's Home Pages). United Way campaigns have kicked off on all the IU campuses. When not working alongside the governor, Wortman, a 21st Century Scholar, is a student government senator and editor of the IUK student newspaper.

Several campaign activities are planned. During "Restaurant Week," Oct. 13-19, many local restaurants will donate the profits from one or more days. Volunteers will be matched with United Way agencies during the "Week of Caring," Oct. 18-25. School of Business students are planning a pumpkin sale, and residence halls will have a "Miss a Meal" contribution day.

The United Way Annual Flea Market, sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, will be held on Oct. 22, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the area between the HPER building and the Art Museum.
