Facility matters, new degrees and discussions on a variety of topics highlighted the September meeting of the IU Trustees, held Sept. 20 on the Bloomington campus.

Trustees approved allocation of a $2 million gift from the President's Office for use in improving child-care facilities on all eight IU campuses (see the Aug. 4 issue of "Home Pages").

They also approved:

Degrees

  • Five new degrees: bachelor of arts in gender studies at Bloomington, technical certificate and associate of science in histotechnology at IUPUI, master of accountancy at Northwest, and a University-wide associate of arts degree (see "IU Home Pages," Sept. 20).

    Facility matters

  • Renovation of the former Central Stores Warehouse at Walnut Grove and 11th streets in Bloomington to serve as a Printmaking Department for the School of Fine Arts (estimated cost $1.4 million).
  • Appointment of architects for a new Law School building at Indianapolis and a new Classroom/Student Support Services building at East.
  • A one-year lease for four units in the Portage Commons Shopping Center in Portage, for use by the Northwest campus as an extension center where day and night classes will be offered to 300 400 students.
  • An information sign for the Northwest campus, to be located at the intersection where Broadway turns off I 80/94 in Gary.
  • Formal names for two facilities on the IUPUI campus -- the Indiana Cancer Pavilion and the IU Cancer Research Institute.

    Personnel

  • Michael McRobbie, vice president for Information Technology, professor of computer science and professor of philosophy.
  • Maria Bucur-Deckard, the John W. Hill assistant professor of history; and Stephen L. Hayford, associate professor of business law, both at IUB; and Lincoln E. Ford, professor of medicine at Indianapolis.

    Named professorships were approved for seven professors:
    Bloomington --
    John A. Boquist, the Edward E. Edwards Professor of Finance; Idalene F. Kesner, the Frank P. Popoff Chaired Professor of Strategic Management; Janet P. Near, the Dale M. Coleman Professor of Management; and Philip M. Podsakoff, the John F. Mee Professor of Management.

    Indianapolis -- Howard Eigen, the Billie Lou Wood Professor of Pediatrics; Larry R. Jones, the Charles Fisch Professor of Cardiology; and Martin B. Kleinman, the Ryan White Professor of Pediatrics.

    Reports
    Trustees discussed part-time faculty and their future at IU and heard reports on the university's new legislative strategy, Strategic Directions, UFC plans for 1996-97 and student concerns at IUB.
