U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala will deliver the 1997 Marvella Bayh Memorial Lecture in Women's Studies at Indiana University Bloomington.

The lecture, the second in the Marvella Bayh series, is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union.

"It is a tremendous honor for IU to have Secretary Shalala be the speaker for this important lecture series," said IU President Myles Brand. "She is one of several national and international leaders who have been on our campus in the past two years. Her appearance presents the IU community with the opportunity to hear one of the most prominent women in the country and to pay tribute to another, the late Marvella Bayh."

Shalala's experience encompasses two decades in management, social policy creation and analysis.

Marvella Bayh died of cancer in 1979 at age 45. The mother of former Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh and wife of former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh, she became nationally known as a skilled public speaker while campaigning for her husband. The first Marvella Bayh Lecturer was "Tipper" Gore, wife of Vice President Al Gore, in 1996.
