John Rau (pictured), dean of the Indiana University School of Business, will resign at the end of the calendar year to become president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Title and Trust Company. His new appointment begins Jan. 1.

Chicago Title and Trust is the country's largest provider of real estate related financial services such as title insurance, escrow and closing services, appraisals, credit information and money management. The company has about 8,400 employees and generates about $1.6 billion in gross revenue annually.

"Dean Rau brought a visionary style of leadership that helped to cement IU's position as one of the nation's leading business schools," IU President Myles Brand said. "He committed to serving for a minimum of three years and in that time he has met the lofty goals he set.

"While Dean Rau will certainly be missed, it is not surprising that one of the nation's largest financial institutions would turn to our business school when seeking new leadership. We will move quickly to build on the great success of Dean Rau and we look forward to his future involvement with IU."

Brand noted that during Rau's leadership, student and faculty recruitments were dramatically improved, faculty salaries increased, the curriculum was enhanced and alumni involvement was greater.

"It has been my great honor and pleasure to be part of the School of Business," Rau said. "Our faculty, one of the best in the nation, has a litany of exceptional accomplishments in recent years. It has been a source of immense satisfaction to lead such an energetic and creative team. Likewise, I am tremendously proud of the quality of the IU School of Business graduates. They occupy upper echelons of corporate board rooms internationally and this trend will only grow in coming years." Rau was named dean of the School of Business in 1993 and, at age 44, was among the youngest deans of highly ranked business schools in the nation. Before that, he was president and chief executive officer of LaSalle National Bank of Chicago, the fifth largest bank in Illinois.

He received his undergraduate degree from Boston College and his master of business administration degree from Harvard.

Brand said an interim dean will be appointed soon and the search for Rau's successor will begin immediately.
