What can IU do to further promote lifelong learning for alumni?

Editor's Note: We asked staff and faculty members to give their views on lifelong learning.

Jennifer R. Bosk
director of alumni relations, IFPW

"Constant communication is a necessity with alumni. It is also necessary to offer 'perks' -- after all, they were customers and now can be cultivated as donors.

Earning a second degree for half price, free auditing of classes, continuing education classes based on topics suggested by alumni -- all of these are a value for having been a student."

Don Beaton
IUK alumni association
board member

"Courses should be geared and scheduled for working alumni with the goal of intellectual stimulation and learning."

John Hobson
associate executive director
IU Alumni Association

"Alumni continuing education forms a relationship between the alumni and the university that clearly benefits both parties. It is not one particular program or course delivery system as much it is as an institutional philosophy that alumni are members of the community of learning."

Irv Levy
director of continuing studies, IUPUI

"We can promote lifelong learning by making continuing education interesting, convenient, low-cost and relevant. We also need to remember that our IU alumni are our customers and we need to treat them that way."

Judith B. Wertheim
executive associate dean, School of Continuing Studies, IUB

"IU already provides many learning opportunities for alumni. Continuing studies offers adults throughout the state, and even beyond, a wide variety of learning options that include credit and noncredit classes, special programs, workshops and professional development opportunities, delivered both on campus and via distance learning formats."
