Patients who survive life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias are at risk
for recurrent arrhythmias and can be treated with either an implantable
cardio-verter-defibrillator or antiarrhythmic drugs. In last week's New
England Journal of Medicine, a research study chaired by IUSM cardiologist
Douglas P. Zipes, reported that among survivors of ven-tricular
fibrillation or sustained ventricular tachycardia causing severe
symptoms, the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator is superior to
antiarrhythmic drugs for increasing overall survival.
