LeRoy T. Walker, president emeritus of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), will present the Marian Godeke Miller Lecture at Indiana University Bloomington, Monday (Feb. 21) at 7 p.m. in Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union. The title of his address, "An Olympic Journey," is taken from the biography An Olympic Journey–The Saga of an American Hero: LeRoy T. Walker, by Charles Gaddy. In 1976, Walker served as head coach of the U.S. men’s track and field team for the Montreal Olympics. His appearance is being arranged through the IUB Department of Kinesiology in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Walker, USOC president from 1992-1996, will discuss the Olympics from the perspective of someone born in segregated Atlanta, Ga., who returned 78 years later to lead the U.S. team into Atlanta Stadium for the 1996 games. He has been recognized as a teacher, coach, scholar and statesman, and has guided American sports organizations through turbulent times of integration, boycotts, political pressures, and financial highs and lows. He also is a former chancellor at North Carolina Central University and served as president of the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games in North Carolina. |
