| When Indiana University School of Music alumni
Joshua Bell and Edgar Meyer took to the stage this past Wednesday (Feb.
23), the house was packed.
As performers at the live telecast and Webcast of the 42nd annual Grammy Awards, the two friends played to an international audience estimated at 1.5 billion in 170 countries. Violinist Bell, who received his artist’s diploma in 1989, and double bassist Meyer, who received his bachelor’s degree in 1984, joined Sam Bush on mandolin and Mike Marshall on guitar in a performance of "Death by Triple Fiddle" from their Grammy-nominated album Short Trip Home. Meyer composed the music for the album and also is co-composer of the hit album Appalachia Waltz, which has sold 200,000 copies. Short Trip Home was a nominee for the Grammy for best classical crossover. In addition, Bell performed as soloist on three other Grammy-nominated albums: Aaron Jay Kernis’’ Air, for best classical contemporary composition; The Red Violin, for best instrumental composition written for a motion picture (which also has been nominated for an Academy Award for best original score); and Listen to the Storyteller, for best spoken word album for children.
