‘The Diversity Timebomb’

By Jayne Spencer

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Phoebe Eng, author of last year’s critically acclaimed Warrior Lessons: An Asian American Woman’s Journey Into Power, is being brought to the Bloomington campus of Indiana University next Thursday (March 2) by a consortium of organizations. Eng will speak at a public gathering at 5 p.m. in the solarium of the Indiana Memorial Union. Her topic will be "The Diversity Timebomb: Working with Chaos."

In an on-line interview with the author, she explained her motivation for the book: "I always wanted a book that I could hand to anyone who ever asked me difficult questions about how women like me deal with race and stereotypes and family pressures, because it was just not possible to fully explain these things in a few minutes," she said. "I could never find these books, so I wrote one myself. I hope Warrior Lessons does for Asian-American women what Gloria Steinem’s and Betty Friedan’s writing did for women in general–giving them a voice of their own grounding and potential."

Sponsors of the visit are the Asian Culture Center, Kappa Gamma Delta, the IU School of Law-Bloomington and the IU Office of Multicultural Affairs, with assistance from the Lily Retention Grant.

A. magazine, co-founded by Eng, made its debut in 1990 to fill the need for a national publication that would speak to, for and about the new generation of Asian Americans. Eng maintains an interactive Web site to explore issues relevant to Asian-American women and A. magazine maintains an on-line archive of articles. Go to these Web sites:
