Pamela Jeffries launched her university teaching career in
the baccalaureate nursing program at IU in the early 1980s while pursuing
her master’s degree in nursing. As a doctoral student, she developed a
pathophysiology course for nursing and radiology students at Indianapolis’
Marian College, taught summer nursing electives at IUPUI and worked in
hospital educational settings, developing instructional materials.
In 1992, she and her husband moved to Indonesia, where she completed her dissertation, became a health educator for the International School in Bandung, taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation courses to hundreds of expatriates, and developed Indonesia’s first health and personal development curriculum for grades K—10. "I believe teaching involves creating an environment for promoting individual growth and assisting students to attain their maximum potential as citizens, nurses and health-care professionals," said Jeffries. Her actions attest to this belief. She is earning an international reputation for the development, testing and implementation of innovative products to enhance the learning of students in academic settings and of registered nurses in service settings. She has developed three CD-ROMs, one relating to electrocardiogram placement and interpretation skills, and two on administration of medications. By incorporating interactive multimedia CD-ROMs, self-study modules and laboratory kits, her students can learn in an independent, self-paced and flexible way. For example, her work as consultant for the University of West England and five other universities has resulted in the development of a CD-ROM on basic life support using international standards. "Jeffries is able to inspire and motivate students to a high level of competence and to the pursuit of new knowledge, and she fosters in students an attitude of professional commitment to meeting the health needs of the public," commented Angela McBride, university dean of the School of Nursing. "She is the consummate master educator."
