Seven Indiana University faculty members who apply information technology to teaching and learning with such tools as intelligent tutoring systems, Web textbooks and interactive programs have been awarded Ameritech Fellows grants in support of their projects. These awards are the first to be made since IU and Ameritech announced the establishment of the program last November with a $1 million award from the Ameritech Foundation.
The awards were announced at an April 11 IU faculty symposium, "New Times, New Technology, New Scholarship: Evolving Faculty Rewards," before an audience of more than 200 faculty convened via video on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses.
Dr. Stan Alexander, radiology, IU School of Medicine: "A Web textbook for the Teaching of Radiology Concepts and Interpretation to Senior Medical Students and/or Housestaff."
Daniel R. Brady, oral biology, IU School of Dentistry: "A Modular Approach to Health Science Education."
John Kremer and Soren Svanum, psychology, IUPUI: "Development of an Interactive Computer Program: Applying Psychology to Life."
Portia Maultsby, folklore and ethnomusicology, IU Bloomington: "Multicultural Multimedia on the Web: From Spirituals to Hip-Hop, the Music and Culture of Black America."
Ali Reza Montazemi, business and economics, IU South Bend: "Intelligent Tutoring System in Support of Mastery Learning."
Howard Rosenbaum, library and information science, IU Bloomington: "Teaching and Learning Electronic Commerce in a Virtual Economy."
Catherine A. Shea, education, IU Southeast: "Electronic Enhancement of Supervision Project."
"These faculty will help perpetuate an environment for innovation across the university," said Garland Elmore, associate vice president for teaching and learning information technologies at IU. "They will also contribute to the development of a teaching and learning 'Knowledge Base,' based on IU's award-winning KB."
IU anticipates supporting as many as 60 projects over the five-year
duration of the Ameritech Fellows Program. The next award cycle will begin
with a call for proposals in November.
