"The power of poetry is mysterious in that
the best poems evoke not only emotions and perceptions,
but they also affect the consciousness of the reader
(or listener) in profound ways. I liken the experience
to that of listening to musichow the 'music' of a
poem wends its way into one's cells. We can't afford to
ignore poetry in our culture; its primal, mythical
elements reunite us with lost parts of ourselves.
We read poetry to better understand our relationship
to the universe, and we write poetry for a similar purpose."
