(Editor's note: According to an April 13 story in the New York Times, 18,000 math teachers attended the NCTM annual meeting this month. A highlight was the release of a revision of the principles and standards document. The new standards, said the Times, emphasizes fundamentals of computation rather than the focus on concepts and reasoning emphasized in previous standards set a decade ago.) A professor at the IU School of Education is helping the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) blaze a trail into the new millennium. As chair of NCTM's Electronic Format Group (EFG), Enrique Galindo was instrumental in the development of the Web-based version of the group's "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics." The high-tech version made its debut on the Internet April 12 (see Web address below). These "E standards" were unveiled at NCTM's 78th annual meeting in Chicago. Conceptualized by the EFG, and developed and field tested by a team directed by Galindo at the IU School of Education in Bloomington, the electronic edition of the principles and standards includes the full contents of the print version, along with additional electronic examples and links. "The project is exciting because it allows teachers and others
interested in the improvement of mathematics education to examine the
standards in different ways, not just the linear sequencing of the book
presentation," said Galindo. "It also takes advantage of
multimedia to better convey those ideas." |
