Indiana University South Bend's Morteza Shafii-Mousavi has won the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Indiana section of the Mathematical Association of America. The award is presented annually to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of those individuals who have been identified as extraordinarily successful teachers in the mathematical sciences and whose teaching has been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions. Shafii-Mousavi's research focus is in mathematical modeling, partial differential equations and mathematics education. He has been serving as chair of the IUSB Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Since 1995, he has conducted a summer institute for high school mathematics instructors in the Michiana area in collaboration with IUSB colleague William Frascella, director of the IU Center for Mathematics Education which is based in Bloomington and dedicated to improving the state's mathematics education programs.
